The A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Onyx is a German-style dress watch
Well done, and reasonably priced.
As one of A. Lange & Söhne's last few new releases for 2025, the Saxonia Thin Onyx is a fresh interpretation of the brand's most affordable and minimalist timepiece. Its differences from the standard model are subtle—the dial is made of onyx, and the case material is not conventionally produced—yet the Saxonia Thin Onyx stands out.
This watch almost perfectly embodies the definition of a dress watch: a flat case, two hands, minimal colors and decorations, allowing it to easily blend into traditional Western formal wear. In fact, it is one of the most competitive products in the dress watch segment because of its simple elegance and reasonable price.
A. Lange & Söhne watches tend to be expensive, mainly because the brand focuses on complications and superior quality. Moreover, A. Lange & Söhne has significantly increased its retail prices in recent years. Therefore, a Lange watch that is both relatively affordable and far from mediocre becomes especially precious.
The Saxonia Thin Onyx is such a timepiece. While based on Lange's entry-level dress watch—a refined yet minimalist timepiece—the onyx version differs in appearance, feel, and materials.
This watch is available in two metals not used in the regular version—platinum and honey gold—while the dial is made of onyx, a mineral currently used only in limited editions. The case is only 6.2 mm thick, half the thickness of the Datograph, fitting comfortably on the wrist.
Although this onyx version has a 40 mm case, rather than the smaller standard size, it remains extremely elegant. I prefer the larger case size, especially with the piano-lacquered dial; a smaller case size would make the dial appear too small.
This is an elegant and formal watch with excellent craftsmanship—the mirror-polished dial adds to its sophistication. While its appearance may be slightly formal and not quite suitable for everyday wear, it's perfectly appropriate as an office watch or when paired with long-sleeved clothing.
This aesthetic style is uncommon for A. Lange & Söhne. Although almost all of the brand's watches have a formal look, largely thanks to German design philosophy, very few can truly be called dress watches, as most are relatively complex, bulky, large, or possess all of these characteristics.
Like the standard model, the Saxonia Thin Onyx is competitively priced. In terms of quality, it rivals its competitors in the same price range; in fact, in some aspects, it offers even better value. Some might find the price a bit high for a watch that only displays the time, but in today's market, it's reasonably priced.

Furthermore, A. Lange & Söhne watches have relatively large production runs, which also benefits their availability. However, because its absolute number is far below the industry average, it will still be a rare and valuable timepiece.
Formal and Refined
Undoubtedly, the Saxonia Thin Onyx watch is a timepiece for formal occasions. Therefore, its design is remarkably simple, featuring only hour and minute hands. This makes it one of the simplest Lange watches, yet the brand's consistently high quality remains clearly visible.
Both the case and dial embody Lange's typical style. The case follows the brand's familiar classic design, but is significantly thinner than previous models. It's worth noting that despite its slim profile, the case still exudes a robust and durable feel, which is uncommon in ultra-thin dress watches.
Both the honey gold and platinum cases have their merits, but the latter has a slight edge, as I find the white metal more formal.
The dial design is almost minimalist—a large polished black onyx dial paired with solid gold baton hour markers and a dial with the white brand logo. The white printed lettering is slightly striking, but not offensive.
Turning the case over reveals an equally simple internal structure—by Lange's standards. The L093.1 movement, streamlined to a thickness of only 2.9 mm, boasts a 72-hour power reserve while retaining classic Lange design elements.
These include three jewels set in screw-fixed gold bases, a black polished steel cap for the escapement jewel, and a hand-engraved balance bridge with a swan-neck regulator. While many of these components are outdated and unnecessary, they are undeniably beautiful.
In today's world, where movement decoration is often overemphasized, Lange's ability to deliver such high-quality finishing at a highly competitive price stands out among most popular independent watchmakers.
