The "Nürburgring Classic" was held for the first time in 2017, with Richard Mille as main partner, and aims to become a long-term event held annually. Over the three-day event, more than 700 classic car enthusiasts participated in 18 races. Guests had the opportunity to drive McLaren 720S and 570S together. Great products are inseparable from great designers. So, McLaren Chief Designer Rob Melville and Richard Mille engineer Fabrice Namura came together, and before long, the RM 11-03 McLaren Flyback Chronograph was born. It is of course heavily inspired by the McLaren 720S sports car, but it also incorporates some Richard Mille signature elements. For example, the carbon fiber case is mixed with Quartz TPT, which is extremely durable and light due to the layers of parallel filaments (fibers). Carbon fiber is also used in sports cars, and the orange color (Bruce McLaren once called it Papaya Orange) reflects McLaren's traditional color code.
The chronograph pushers are made of titanium and are shaped like the headlights of the McLaren 720S. Equally impressive is the crown, which is a mini replica of McLaren's lightweight wheel. The large hands coated with luminous coating on the openworked dial improve legibility. On this colorful dial, time looks particularly busy. The RM 11-03 is equipped with the RMAC3 movement, which has a flyback chronograph function and a 55-hour power reserve. To achieve the ideal lightweight construction, most of the movement parts are made of ceramic or grade 5 titanium, which is PVD-coated to increase its hardness. Some parts are even made of white gold (such as ribs and counterweights). This is very challenging, because the plates and bridges have to withstand considerable pressure. But it reflects the ambitious craftsmanship of sports car manufacturing.
The movement is equipped with a memory system that can be adjusted according to the wearer's lifestyle. Simply move the screw on the rotor (visible on the back of the case) to change the way the rotor is loaded. In this way, the inertia of the rotor is adjusted so that the winding speed is increased when the arm movements are more relaxed, and the winding speed is slowed down when physical activities are carried out.
