Richard Mille RM 56-02 Tourbillon Sapphire

Richard Mille RM 56-02 Tourbillon Sapphire

Most attendees at SIHH 2012 would agree that the most eye-catching, most talked about and most famous watch at the show was Richard Mille’s sapphire case model. It was unlike anything the industry had seen before and caused quite a stir, not only because of its sapphire case (an extremely tricky material to work with) but also because of its unobtainable price tag.

Richard Mille is rarely surpassed by others in the watch industry, but they do like to top their accomplishments. Therefore, since the launch of their first glass masterpiece, they have further developed their technology for machining and milling crystal blocks and launched the successors RM 56-01 and more recently the RM 56-01 based on the original RM 056 model. The new RM 56-02 Sapphire Tourbillon watch, specially created for the "Watches and Wonders" event in Hong Kong.

Richard Mille RM 56-02 Sapphire Watch – Clockwork Illusion
Apart from the sapphire case, the main attraction of this watch is its movement, a completely new movement whose layout provides the viewer with a horological illusion that will no doubt be appreciated by thousands of viewers. Attracted by this watch. The movement is inspired by the clever design of the RM 27-01, which you may remember was designed for Rafael Nadal to wear on a daily basis, even on a bad day , his serve on the tennis court can also reach over 100 mph. The base plate of the movement is made of grade 5 titanium and is completely suspended in the sapphire case using a single braided cable just 0.35 mm thick, which is woven into an ingenious pulley system and each corner of the movement Each has a column, and a caliber of 6 columns are placed along the periphery. A ratchet (albeit a small one) at 9 o'clock controls the cable's tension, and there's a tension indicator below 12 o'clock to let the wearer know everything is fine, or if adjustments are needed. But that's not all. Now that Richard Mille has mastered the art of making microscopic components out of sapphire, they have added a new sapphire winding barrel bridge, tourbillon and center bridge to this new model.

Richard Mille RM 56-02 Sapphire Watch – Challenging Construction
For the technicians responsible for the development and manufacture of these Richard Mille presentation models, the sapphire case presented a difficult challenge. Such unique cases should not be measured simply in millimeters, but in the time it takes to create them. Each three-part case requires 40 days of machining time, and the movement bridges require 400 hours of machining and finishing. In addition to spending hours and days crafting each piece, Richard Mille also invested time and resources into researching and developing this new watchmaking process.
