With the opening of the Watches and Wonders Expo, visitors flocked to the Patek Philippe windows to catch a glimpse of the watchmaker's new releases. That's an impressive list of 17 models. The case of the watch is basically the same as its siblings, and it is available in two white gold models: a blue-gray sunburst dial (the color of a moody sky) and a military khaki green lacquered dial. Both watches are equipped with leather straps that match the color of their respective dials.

As with all Patek Philippe watches, legibility is very important. So, the brand did away with the second hand, because let's be honest, who really needs it? Two large chronograph counters extend to the center of the dial, displaying the date at 12 o'clock and a 60-minute totalizer at 6 o'clock. The three hands on the dial display the local time and home time through solid hands and hollow hands respectively. Two additional apertures display the day/night status of each time zone.

The CH 28-520 self-winding in-house chronograph is the basis of this watch movement. The vertically coupled design means this watch runs accurately with or without the chronograph running, so in theory you could use the central chronograph seconds hand as a running seconds hand if you wanted to. It has a power reserve of 45 hours and is equipped with a silicon escapement, which ensures the anti-magnetic qualities of the movement.

This year, Ref. 5316 swaps the enamel for a sapphire crystal with a blue metallic effect and black gradient edges. The result is a watch that showcases one of the brand's most complicated movements, with the heart of the movement clearly visible on the dial. At midnight, the instantaneous perpetual calendar window switches to the next day. To make the watch more casual, the alligator leather is replaced with a calfskin strap with an embossed fabric pattern and contrasting stitching.

The difference between the old and new Ref. 5316 editions is remarkable – two identical watches but with very different identities. This is a great example of how classic can be transformed into modern with some great design tweaks.

In all other respects little has changed from the original Ref. 6007A. The movement that drives this watch is a Caliber 26-330 SC, the same movement that drives the Twenty~4 Automatic and numerous other Patek Philippe chronographs.

The collection also adds a new, feminine Calatrava. referee. The pink gold version 4997/200R-001 has a lavender dial with a wave ring. It is coated with more than 50 layers of translucent lacquer, creating light and dark tones on the dial, which play with the cascading light. Gold elongated triangular hour markers point outwards rather than inwards, adding to the effect of the radiating wave pattern that spreads out from the centre.
