For over 20 years, Ulysse Nardin has been pushing the boundaries of its watchmaking technology, with one of its most iconic creations being the Freak, first launched in 2001. The watch was revolutionary at the time because it had no dial, no hands, and no crown. Instead, the time is set by a system integrated into the bezel and wound using a mechanism built into the case back. And it has no hands, but uses a rotating one-hour Carrousel tourbillon to display the time.

Freak is a watchmaking laboratory that was the first Swiss watch to feature a silicon escapement, which in 2001 was considered radical and expensive. Since then, Ulysse Nardin has filed more than 20 patents for the Freak, which has been the basis of many modern wrist watches for men with silicon components.

This year, Ulysse Nardin launched the Freak ONE, which returns to the roots of the original Freak—no dial, no hands, no crown—while synthesizing the visual dynamics of previous Freak generations.

The 44mm x 12mm case is crafted from black DLC-coated titanium with a satin finish and features a rose gold 5N bezel and black titanium case back with sapphire portholes. Water resistant to 30 meters/100 feet.

The Freak's unconventional time-setting system is operated through the bezel. When the locker ① at 6 o'clock is lifted, it is activated, releasing the setting system. Turning the bezel rotates the entire movement, which doubles as the watch hands. Pushing the locker down secures the bezel in place so the time setting system cannot be disturbed.

The Freak's distinctive minute bridge ③ hovers beneath the sapphire crystal and hosts the entire gear train, the oversized silicon oscillator and the orbital 60-minute flying Carrousel tourbillon. The escapement is treated with Ulysse Nardin's patented DIAMonSIL coating, a synthetic diamond and silicon plasma surface treatment that makes the movement wear-resistant and shock-resistant.

The in-house UN-240 self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and offers a 72-hour power reserve. Its patented Grinder winding system ④ has been engineered to capture energy from even the slightest wrist movement. Its rotor is attached to a frame with four blades, which triples the angular travel of the system, sort of like a bicycle with four pedals instead of two.
