In 2015, the Tetra was originally conceived as a hand-wound watch and powered by the brand's first Alpha movement, equipped with the in-house movement DUW 300 (neomatik). Measuring just 3.2mm in height, this ultra-thin movement brings extra practicality and modernity to Tetra. The Tetra neomatik still comes with a hand-wound movement in 29.5mm and 27.5mm cases, it is the automatic version with a larger case size of 33 x 33mm, a lug-to-lug distance of 45.3mm and a case height of 7.3 mm. While the smaller case size comes in a range of delicate pastel colours, the larger Tetra neomatik sticks to a more traditional blue and silver dial.
With four equal sides and four equal 90-degree angles, Nomos' avant-garde watch is cheekily square. While the off-white dial might not be the bold color most of us think of it to be, it is a refreshing new addition to the Tetra neomatik 39 collection. Some might describe it as an eggshell color due to its slightly beige hue. Either way, it's much warmer than the silver dials in the current collection. The red, blue and black dial is very bold, very bold indeed. The brand explains that the colors on the dial are applied “using a technique with an effect comparable to that of enamel: incident light is not absorbed by the opaque surface, but reflected”. Compared with the existing midnight blue dial, the new blue dial is brighter, richer, and sometimes even purple. A similar thing happens with the red dial, which glows an intense deep orange under certain lighting conditions.
The unique typography used on inscriptions, numbers and signs is an integral part of the Nomos replica luxury watches design philosophy. Slender Arabic numerals at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10 o'clock are complemented by slender baton markers and a downward-sloping peripheral minute track to emphasize the squareness of the dial.
The dark dial uses beige indicators, while the off-white dial uses blue for contrast. All four models feature slender baton hands without any trace of luminous, and a gold dot at 6 o’clock complements the gold neomatik inscription of noon. The small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock is slightly recessed, with smaller baton markers and red hands on the white and black models, and silver on the red and blue models.
Similar to earlier models of the Tetra neomatik 30, the watch's strap is made of thick brown Horween shell corduroy. By the way, shell cordovan is an expensive and extremely hard wearing shiny thick leather that will never crack. Cordovan differs in that it is taken from the hindquarters, or rump, of a horse. Due to the small area of horse hide from which this particular hide is extracted (and since we don't eat much horse meat these days), the price is much higher than regular cowhide. The caseback, with four equally sloping sides, has a round sapphire crystal that reveals the neomatik DUW 3001 movement inside. Measuring just 3.2mm thick, this ultra-thin automatic movement is powered by the Nomos oscillating system. Introduced in 2014 with a proprietary escapement with tempered blue hairspring, the oscillating system makes Nomos completely independent. The skeletonized two-way winding oscillating weight draws energy from the wrist, provides a 43-hour power reserve, and is decorated with Glashütte's signature ribbing.
