For a long time, Pelagos and Pelagos LHD were the only ones in the growing Tudor watch series, but for many watch fans, the Pelagos model is the real face of the brand. They are watches without the influence of big brother Rolex, with their own distinct identity and soul. Tudor realized that the value of the Pelagos series was much more than that. Nacho, I'll try to keep it simple. I know I have a tendency to write long articles and we want to hit the point. We also covered the Tudor Pelagos 39 in a previous installment of this series, but it felt a little weird going up against the Tudor Ranger after all. This week's game is more logical because we keep it in the family - more precisely the Pelagos family. We'll ignore the marketing that confused many, including Thomas, who mentioned it during his match against Ranger. The simple answer to that question is versatility and style. But before I get into these two key aspects, let's hammer out some specs. The Pelagos 39 has a 39mm grade 2 titanium case and a full titanium bracelet. The case has a slightly larger bezel of 40mm, a thickness of 11.8mm and a lug-to-lug distance of 47mm. It makes the Pelagos 39 easier to wear than its larger sibling, which is 42mm wide, 14.4mm thick, and has a 50mm gap between lugs. While I could perfectly take off a watch that size, I honestly just don't want to. As a certified diver, I want my Pelagos to be versatile everyday wearers, not hardcore dive watches. And that kind of versatility is what the Pelagos 39 offers in its smaller size.
Not the ultimate but perfect spec set
While I love the original Pelagos for what it represents in terms of style, I don't want a chunky 42mm diver with a helium escape valve. Of course, the Pelagos is Tudor's line of modern tool watches, and the regular 42mm version is the epitome of that line. But for the Pelagos I want, the Pelagos 39 has the perfect specs. The watch is water resistant to 200 meters, which is far more than I need. One Pelagos is different from another
This is the watch face we also have to talk about now. I also prefer the dial and bezel of the Pelagos 39 to its bigger brother. You see, Nacho, one of the big issues I've always had with the 42mm Pelagos is that it feels pretty dead. The brushed titanium with matte black dial and matte black ceramic bezel lacks the sparkle I want from Pelagos. While some have accused the new Pelagos 39 of being dull, to me its superior performance sibling is the dullest of the two. And I think Tudor also recognized that the new smaller model needed to add a little more oomph to its overall look.
When I read that Tudor applied a sunburst texture to the dial and bezel, I was a little worried. A black sunburst dial can be too shiny and flashy. Is there also a sunburst pattern on the bezel inlay? seeing is believing. As soon as you see a watch in metal, you immediately realize that this texture adds depth and presence to the watch. The finish is very fine and adds more texture than any kind of strong sunburst. I think Tudor added it to the Pelagos 39, knocking it out of the park. It elevates the watch into a fun piece to wear every day, from every angle you look at it. Speaking of the bezel, it looks gray from certain angles, like a ghost bezel. Thanks, Georg! You make some good arguments in favor of the Pelagos 39 Beacon of Hype, and I can't say I wholeheartedly disagree. The only problem is that when you boil it down, the only real advantage is that it's the right size today. But you know what they say: here today, gone tomorrow. Like the unmentioned abstractions to which this expression refers, current tastes (in terms of watch sizes, etc.) don't stop here. Watches are—or should be—products that last you a lifetime, so you have to think long-term. Let's face it, isn't the 42mm Speedmaster Professional better than the smaller, compromised Reduced?
Sure, the Pelagos 39 is a handsome alternative to its big brother, but it falls short in key ways. I am referring to the fact that while the 39 has a fair amount of Pelagos DNA, it must also be seen as a betrayal of the original concept behind the watch. Pelagos was launched in 2015 as the brand's ultimate dive watch. Now, I'll briefly cover the last section. I mentioned some key aesthetic differences that for me (and many others) make a world of difference. The first, which you can see above, are the wonderful rehauts that line the inside of the dial, embracing the lume blocks that make up the hour markers. This adds a lot of depth to the dial, and while it's a subtle detail, it's always one of the reasons I love the original Tudor Territory. Do I know before the new one comes out? No; actually, it didn't dawn on me until I put it on my wrist the day after it launched. Also, I don't really mind the Pelagos dates. It's one of the most integrated date windows on a watch, disappearing into the dial like an hour marker without disrupting its symmetry.
Finally, there's the matte finish. In my hands-on article on the Tudor Pelagos 39, I mentioned that I do like the watch, but it almost feels like we're being told how to feel about it in its marketing. Its sunburst finish on the bezel and dial makes it (whatever that means) more "unisex". I think, honestly, brands doubt themselves and change for change's sake. Would the matte 39mm Pelagos be too much like the Tudor Subs of the 60s and 70s? We may never know. But all I know is that Tudor got it right the first time, and as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Maybe you guys agree with me that 42mm Pelagos definitely don't need any repairs .
