He has a point. Patek Philippe has always focused on beautiful and complex watches made of precious metals. This is their raison d'être. How would they go backwards if they were to reduce production of gold and platinum complications to meet demand for steel 3-hand Nautilus? If steel Nautilus are readily available at RRP in boutique windows, what is it that people desire for these watches? Patek Philippe is unwilling to find out. Versatility
The Nautilus is one of those go-anywhere watches. It's slender enough to fit under the cuffs, formal enough to wear with a suit, and waterproof enough (120m) to breeze through anything the beach and some scuba diving might throw at it. There are not many sports watches that can claim such all-round status. The Royal Oak has a relatively shallow water resistance of 50 meters (meaning you can get it wet, but not recommended for diving and lots of water). The Submariner is a rugged diver's watch that's great for casual use, but whether it's suitable as a dressier watch thanks to the rotating bezel is hotly debated. The Daytona can slip under the cuff and swim to 100 meters, but as a chronograph it doesn't have the same simple appeal. Its competitors, such as Rolex and Audemars Piguet, are instantly recognizable, but Patek Philippe has a level of understatement that is very attractive to those who are picky about watches. In 2015, Patek Philippe released the 5711/1R in rose gold with a beautiful smoked black dial. Incredibly, for a few thousand dollars more than the steel version, you can wear an all-rose Nautilus, but that's the way the watch world is at the moment.
