Bell & Ross BR 05 Copper Brown Watch
When Bell & Ross released the BR 05 in 2019, it marked a clear shift in the direction of the brand. Unlike the brand's most famous radical square-case gauges or retro-inspired aviation watches, the BR 05 is modern, elegant and curvaceous. However, Bell & Ross' heritage and style, including the square case and exposed case screws, is unmistakable. In the latest version of the BR 05, Bell & Ross BR 05 Copper Brown opts for a luxurious metallic sunburst dial to provide a warm, modern look to the underutilized colorway.
The BR 05 has clearly resonated with consumers, and Bell & Ross has been repeating the design with no signs of slowing down. There are three collections of BR 05: 40mm Auto, 41mm GMT and 42mm Chronograph. In each collection, Bell & Ross explores a range of materials, finishes, dials and, of course, colors. From steel cases with soft dials to full gold watches with skeletonized dials, Bell & Ross wanted to capture a look that suits every taste, whether conservative or avant-garde. The BR 05 Copper Brown is right in the middle of that spectrum, with an all-steel 40mm case and a striking, hard-to-miss dial.
We've seen the BR 05 Auto in multiple colorways, including black, silver, green, and blue, but copper brown brings warmth to the palette, which is welcome for those who like earth tones and warm tones . We've seen a ton of salmon dial releases over the past few years, so it's great to see Bell & Ross opting for a fresh dial color when looking for a warmer hue to add to the lineup. Launching this watch in early fall feels totally appropriate.
The copper dial is given a sunburst finish by circular micro-engraving on the dial metal plate, which is then coated with several coats of varnish. The result is a dynamic dial that changes from dark brown to honey depending on the light. The BR 05 also features applied markings and numerals, and doesn't skimp on details, adding a color-matched copper surround and a color-matched date wheel.
Although marketed as an urban watch, the BR 05 features 100m water resistance, a screw-down crown, and a powerful luminous light, which means it's very sturdy to wear when out in the mountains. Topped by a sapphire crystal, the watch features a matching display caseback on the back, showcasing the automatic Bell & Ross BR-CAL.321 movement that powers the watch, with a 38-hour power reserve and 28,800 bph.
Like other square or square watches, the simple diameter size (40mm in this case) is only part of the story, as the square increases the surface area of the case, resulting in a watch that is physically and visually Larger than its circular counterpart. On the wrist, this means the watch will be worn larger than its recommended diameter of 40mm. That said, Bell & Ross spends a lot of time making sure the BR 05 fits comfortably on a variety of wrist sizes. The comfortable wearing experience is partly due to the short, curved lugs, but is largely due to the beautiful one-piece bracelet.
One of the reasons why all-in-one bracelet sports watches are back in vogue is simply because of comfort. Bell & Ross apparently took the time to develop the integrated bracelet as part of the overall package. The bracelet is as important to the wearing experience as the watch itself, not an afterthought. The bracelet is still slender but sturdy - complimenting the slender 10.33mm case height - and tapers significantly down to the butterfly clasp. The choice of the two-button butterfly clasp is another nod to the watch's intent as an urban watch, as the brand opted for a clean, minimal design that slides easily under the cuffs rather than a large, overbuilt clasp . The downside of integrated bracelets is often the lack of aftermarket strap options.
Copper Brown is a welcome addition to Bell & Ross' already colorful BR 05 collection, offering a warm color we simply don't see. While some brands may get tired of simply adding more colorways to popular collections, more choice is always a good thing, and Copper Brown shows exactly why.
