Over the summer, the watchmaking duo of Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner presented the final version of the Urwerk UR-210 watch, a classic in contemporary independent watch design that has become my most associated reference since its launch in 2012 . with their company. Recently, they announced the successor to the UR-210 in the form of the new UR-220, codenamed "Project Falcon". In addition to its cool looks, the UR-220 introduces some new features, including the return of other features, and provides a glimpse into the next chapter in the UR-200 series.
In terms of materials, the UR-220 case features 81 layers of ultra-thin, high-resistance 150-gram CTP carbon, compressed into a hard resin. The fact that it consists of multiple layers is obvious if you look closely at the sloping top of the case. (CTP stands for Carbon Thin Ply; we've seen this material used in the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater as well). The UR-220 strap is made of rubber, a first for Urwerk. Most obviously, the UR-220 uses the familiar planetary or wandering time system. Unlike the UR-210 model, however, the movement here is hand-wound rather than self-winding.
Most of us tend to associate this iconic three-arm display with the Urwerk. Hours are displayed on three blocks attached to three arms. The display section includes a 120-degree arc along which the arm passes, picking up retrograde minutes, and as they go, they snap back to the hours. The display looks a little complicated at first, but it's actually quite intuitive. Each swivel arm has a block with numbers corresponding to the hours on its four sides. I should say that the only other dial side display is the power reserve indicator or indicator. There are two of them, located in the upper-left and upper-right corners of the display. Each of them tracks a continuous 24-hour cycle, so when the first is filled or emptied, the second takes over for a total power reserve of 48 hours. Splitting the power reserve between the two monitors is no easy task: it requires about 83 additional parts.
On the back of the UR-220 we see the return of the oil change indicator, a display long seen in Urwerk's UR-110 model. Under the guise of the UR-220, this indicator has received some improvements. When the owner has a new UR-220, he or she will notice the pins on the back of the watch. Pulling the pin will cause the oil change indicator to start counting the months in which the watch is active. Looking at the UR-220, one can see that it is very similar to the recently retired UR-210. The CTP carbon fiber case - Urwerk's first of its kind - uses a hand-wound movement and a titanium caseback, making the UR-220 a lightweight watch that is relatively stylish by Urwerk standards watch. The new shell material also gives the UR-220 a wonderfully textured look. I thought it was a great look, but I was surprised that Urwerk hadn't made a carbon fiber shell before, so I reconfirmed this with the company's US office. The rubber strap has a great textured/layered look that goes well with the case and is another surprising first.
But to me, the oil change indicator with removable pin is probably the coolest element in the new UR-220.
